Dallas Mavericks: cosa significa il titolo NBA per la franchigia e i suoi membri

Dallas sta festeggiando: un gruppo innumerevole di colossi mondiali da tutto il mondo investe ogni anno una grande quantità di denro per poter rappresentare le più grandi città americane in una lega sportiva in cui la gente, fondamentalmente, gioca con la palla. Tutto questo con lo scopo di vincere il campionato, cosa che riesce infilando la palla in un cilindro di ferro e cotone più volte di ognuna delle 29 franchigie avversarie sparse in tutta la nazione.
E in un paese nel quale “if you ain’t first, you last”,il titolo NBA 2011 da ragione ad un’ organizzazione che ha vinto al massimo 50 partite all’anno per undici stagioni consecutive. Vediamo cosa significa tutto ciò per le persone coinvolte in questo trionfo:
I fans dei Mavericks
In città c’è un nucleo di tifosi che hanno letteralmente fatto sempre registrare il sold out all’ American Airlines Center per oltre un decennio, cavalcando gli anni in cui tutti erano affascinati da un roster speciale: vi era infatti un promettente e giovane team che vestiva la casacco biancoblù alla fine degli anni 80. Tutto fu dstrutto da un caso di doping e droga legato a Roy Tarpley; questo scandalo,solo pochi anni dopo, trasformò i Mavs in una delle peggiori formazioni nella stora NBA.
Ciò fece si che il nucleo texano di stelle chiamato “Three J’s”, formato da Jason Kidd, Jim Jackson e Jamal Mashburn, fosse già distrutto prima di potersi lanciare alla conquista delle lega, fino a qando uno scienziato pazzo (parliamo ovviamente di Don Nelson) decise di cambiare le cose puntando tutto su un playmaker canadese e un giovane teenager tedesco,che aveva si ancora molto da imparare,ma consentivà già alla dirigenza di poter promettere grandi cose.
I “Big Three” dell’epoca; Steve Nash, Michael Finley e Dirk Nowitzki,dovettero passare prima le varie pene che affliggono le giovani stelle, salvo poi rifarsi dopo mandando al tappeto storiche coppie di giocatori come i Malone/Stockton dei Jazz,i Webber/Peja dei Kings e la famigerata accoppiata Duncan più Robinson degli Spurs.
Nel 2003, la squadra fu sconfitta alle Western Conference Finals per colpa di un infortunio al ginocchio accorso a Nowitzki. Nash decise di approdare ai Phoenix Suns due anni dopo, diventando una delle più grandi stars nel panorama NBA, vincendo due titoli da MVP e spazzando il suo ex team fuori dai playoff. E nulla va ancora detto sulle Finals NBA del 2006 o l’implosione di una squadra capace di vincerne 67 nel 2007 arrivando a toccare il massimo splendore senza portare a casa nulla di che.
L’unica franchigia dei tempi moderni che ha dovuto soffrire così tanto prima di poter organizzare la parata della vittoria, è stata quella formata dai Bad Boy dei Detroit Pistons: persero la prima vera opportunità nel 1987 per colpa di una palla rubata a seguito di un passaggio rivedibile e si videro rubare Gara 7 della NBA Finals targate 1988. Qui nessun fallo fu fischiato ai danni di Magic Johnson quando diede un colpo da k.o. a Isiah Thomas,sbattendolo sul parquet a due secondi dalla fine.
Rick Carlisle
Il coach perfetto per una squadra di veterani, Carlisle ha trovato il mix perfetto tra un innovativo modello offensivo lasciato in eredità da Don Nelson e un originale schema offensivo caratterizzato dalla voglia di difendere, creazione del buon Avery Johnson. Questo allenatore ha saputo toccare l’ego di una squadra con 27 apparizioni all’All-Star nel collettivo dei suoi membri oltre a manipolare espertamente e a vantaggio ogni match-ups durante tutti i playoffs.
Come per molti suoi giocatori, Dallas è stata la chance di Carlisle per prendersi una rivincita sulle precedenti deludenti esperienze ai playoff. Era coach sulla panchina dei Pistons durante le Conference Finals del 2002, prima di essere cacciato a favore di Larry Brown. Trovò un buon contratto in Indiana, dove aiutò nel costruire una squadra che sembrava capace di poter sconfiggere i nuovi Bad Boys, prima che Artest e soci non decisero di inscenare la famosa megarissa al Palace,che spedì immediatamente la franchigia nei bassifondi della lega.
Jason Terry
Uno dei migliori tiratori nella NBA, il chiacchierone Terry è uno dei soli due Mavericks rimasti “a casa” dopo l’amaro delle Finals 2006. Semplicemente un ex scorer esplosivo che l’età ha trasformato,come dicono in america,in uno spot-up shooter; nonostante un prezioso Sixth Man of the Year nella sua vetrina, è passato attraverso una serie negativa che dura da più di qualche apparizione ai playoffs. Quest’anno però tutto è cambiato e JT ha scelto di prendere il suo ruolo meno con le molle, concentrandosi molto sulla fase difensiva del suo gioco ed esplodendo in più strisce positive dall’arco dei 7,25 quando la cosa si rendeva necessaria ai fini della vittoria.
Shawn Marion
Dopo aver abbandonato il teatrino di Phoenix a causa di vari malcontanti generatisi nel 2008, Marion ha giocato in squadre mediocri come le vecchie Toronto e,guarda caso, Miami. Due anni dopo ha deciso di trasferirsi a Dallas. All’inizio della sua carriera, era un giocatore di 6’7 piedi per 95 kg di peso,che basava il proprio gioco sull’esplosività difensiva che è sempre rara da trovare in un potenziale playmaker così alto, capace infatti di entrare nel quintetto All-NBA Defense in quattro diverse posizioni sul campo. Un record,
Marion è stato il collante dei Suns, coprendo i cali difensivi di Amar’e Stoudemire e Nash. Ma non è mai sato contento di giocare all’ombra delle appena citate superstars di casa Phoenix, così che i Suns colsero subito l’occasione per spedirlo fuori città.
A Dallas, Shaw ha saputo riscoprire se stesso,anche partendo sempre dalla panchina prima dell’infortunio di Caron Butler. La bravura è stata quella di reinventare se stesso come uno dei pezzi fondamentali nel puzzle: ha migliorato molto la sua capacità nel tiro da tre e il suo veloce rilascio T-Rex in modo da essere efficace, anche quando su di lui venivano piazzate difese importanti come quelle di Brandon Roy, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant e LeBron James. Tutte arrivate in maniera consecutiva.
Il suo ruolo centrale durante questo finale di stagione, ha saputo fargli guadagnare un prezioso anello prima di Nash, Amar’e e Mike D’Antoni, riaprendo le domande sul fatto che lui possa essere o meno un tassello fondamentale all’interno di un team NBA. Anche per lui dunque,rivincita è dire poco.
Tyson Chandler
Come vero e proprio muscolo dei Mavs ha fatto vedere la sua vastità di prodezze difensive; Chandler ha scacciato ogni tipo di dubbio sulla sua capacità di restare in salute per più di qualche mese ed insieme,essere dominante come un “Golia” di fronte ad ambizioni massime. Un centro di 215 cm non molto pesanti,che ha due pistoni al posto delle gambe, era chiaramente il giocatore più atletico ed incisivo nel suo ruolo. Partita dopo partita ha cancellato i lunghi avversari.
Chandler è stata una delle quattro scelte (tutti ragazzi alti almeno 2.10m) arrivate dirattamente dall’ high-school e draftate nella top ten del Draft 2001. Chandler ha sempre fatto meglio degli altri tre,grazie al talento e dal lavoro fatto per lui dalle varie squadre in cui ha militato. Poi l’arrivo a Dallas. Sarà ora free agent a partire da fine mese, ma gli piacerebbe trovare un accordo con i Mavs che gli consenta di vestire la stessa maglia fino alla fine della sua carriera.
Donnie Nelson (GM dei Dallas Mavericks)
Mentre suo padre disegnava le linee guida come coach e il suo capo tracciava quelle da proprietario, il perfetto uomo all’interno della NBA andava alla ribalta come General Manager dei Mavs per oltre una decade. Dallas ha dovuto costruire tre squadre completamente differenti intorno all’incedibile Dirk,riuscendo sempre a vincere almeno 50 partite a stagione. Questo attesta la capacità dell’organizzazione nel sapersi reinventare senza mai rischiare di cadere in basso.
Nelson ha trasformato Erick Dampier in Tyson Chandler, Antoine Walker in Jason Terry, Antawn Jamison in Devin Harris e Jerry Stackhouse, gli stessi due nell’ordine in Jason Kidd e Shawn Marion. Ha scoperto Josh Howard al numero #29, Rodrigue Beaubois alla chiamata #25 e Marquise Daniels più JJ Barea messi sotto contratto come free agents non scelti al draft.
Inoltre con Nelson al comando, la possibilità per i Mavericks di raggiungere il titolo non è mai stata tanto piccola come gli scettici scrivevano di anno in anno.
Mark Cuban
In ogni caso, molte delle trade concluse con la firma di Nelson sarebbero state impossibile se a Dallas non vi fosse stato un proprietario capace di pagare di anno in anno una salata luxury tax, un proprietario che non si faceva mai spaventare dalle spese esagerate dettate dal sogno di vincere tutto. Il portafoglio largo di Cuban ha così permesso ai Mavericks di passare da niente ad una delle franchigie più valutate,economicamente parlando, dell’intera NBA. Sicuramente il suo stile sarà di esempio per tutta la nuova generazione di proprietari.
La sua passione ha sempre condotto attraverso parecchi pastiocci nel corso degli anni, ma ha deciso di abbassare i toni quest’anno già a partire dalle urla che lo distinguevano come si proprietario,ma anche fan numero uno. pochi investitori sono così vicini alla quotidianità delle propria franchigia come Cuban, e sembrano quasi gli stessi che hanno raggiunto il diritto di aggiudicarsi il Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Jason Kidd
Una delle due stelle più luminose all’interno dell’organico in casa Mavs’, uno dei due più grandi Hall of Famers. Kidd fu messo sotto contratto dopo il 2007, qua ndo la squadra era alla ricerca di un ottima leadership e di parecchia stabilità in più. Proprio perchè Kidd vorrebbe essere inserito all’interno della lista che vede protagonisti i migliori playmaker nella storia, questo titolo potrebbe farlo passare direttamente nella top five della stessa.
La guardia più anziana nell’attuale NBA è ora anche la guardia più anziana che abbia mai disputato le NBA Finals; il 38enne ha dovuto rivedere il suo modo di giocare fin da quando è entrato nel sistema dei Mavs: vista l’età e l’esplosività che viene a mancare.JK ha fatto del suo tiro da tre l’arma principale. Dopo essere stato chiamato “Ason” (poichè non aveva ancora la J,ed il suo secondo nome è Frederick) per gran parte della sua carriera e dopo che i giorni in cui era leader assoluto nel New Jersey se ne sono andati, Kidd ha riscoperto se stesso lavorando molto più sul suo gioco “statico” nella metà campo,che sul gioco ritmato e molto spinto che lo ha reso grande neli anni passati.
La sua difesa sui tiratori avversari e sulle ali piccole hanno consentito ai Mavs di far giocare con meno problemi Terry e JJ Barea, i loro giocatori undersized. Kidd ha accettato la sfida di marcare Kobe e Wade,le due migliori guardie tiratrici della sua stessa epoca. Il pick-and-roll tra lui e Nowitzki, due giocatori con più di 1,000 gare NBA disputate, è un’espressione magnifica di bellezza ed esperienza.
Dirk Nowitzki
La faccia della franchigia, Dirk ha ricevuto l’onore di rappresentare tutto quello che è Mavericks,come le sconfitte del 2006 e del 2007. Fino ad ora,nella sua carriera, il tedesco ha collezionato cifre che dicono 26 punti più 10 rimbalzi a sera, numeri che fin’ora si possono attribuire solo a tre giocatori: Hakeem, Bob Pettit and Wilt.
Vincere un titolo come questo cementifica la sua posizione nel pantheon riservato ai grandi della NBA; negli ultimi 25 anni, solo altri quattro giocatori — Hakeem, Duncan, Ben Wallace and Isiah Thomas — hanno vinto un titolo NBA essendo gli unici All-Starpresenti nella loro squadra. Uno dei più unici giocatori nella NBA, Nowitzki ha usato la sua altezza non per fare il bullo grazie alla sua stazza,ma per costruire un incontestabile jumper. Vincente.
Una vera e propria piattaforma di tiro tra le nuvole, che gli scout NBA hanno cercato per quasi un decennio oltre oceano e che ancora continuano a cercare, sperando di trovare giocatori — da Darko ad Andrea Bargnani a Yi Jianlian — che possano replicare il gioco di Dirk. Yao,il più alto giocatore che sia stato impostato sul modello tedesco,è già praticamente fuori dalla sfera NBA, ma Kevin Durant sembra perfetto a trasformare i suoi Thunder nei Mavericks dell’ultimo decennio.
Il gioco di Dirk è bastato completamente sulle due cose che consentono ad un giocatore di avere longevità nella propria carriera: dimensioni e capacità di tiro. inoltre Dirk ha solo 32 anni; non diventerà certo più piccolo con gli anni e il suo jumper non potrà mai peggiorare drasticamente,poichè deriva si dal lavoro quotidiano,ma anche e indubbiamente da un talento innato. Anche se può sembrare strano,anche con un titolo NBA nel proprio curriculum vitee, il veterano con 12 anni di esperienza NBA ha ancora mille possibilità difronte a se.
