Avete avuto modo di leggere su queste pagine del come nacque la pallacanestro, un’invenzione mirabile di un solo uomo. Ma ancora più incredibile è scoprire chi furono i veri artefici dell’espansione del basket.
A fine 1800, ovviamente, non c’erano i mezzi di comunicazione che noi tutti oggi conosciamo. E così fondamentale fu l’apporto degli ostelli YMCA e dei college. Dai primi, veri e propri collegi missionari, partivano tanti giovani per portare il messaggio cristiano in giro per l’america e il mondo, e oltre a questo portavano la pallacanestro come sport di aggregazione.
Ma fu nei college americani, a cavallo dei due secoli, che nacquero le prime squadre e i primi campionati. La particolarità però, e che furono le donne le vere pioniere della pallacanestro, essendo loro le prime a partecipare ai campionati intercollegiali. E fu così non solo negli States, ma anche in molti altri paesi, tra cui l’Italia dove l’introduzione della pallacanestro si deve ad una donna: Ida Nomi che tradusse il regolamento originario di Naismith e fondo la prima squadra (femminile) di “palla al cerchio”: la Mens Sana Siena.
Tornando in America, i primi anni del nuovo secolo videro crescere la curiosità e la passione verso la pallacanestro maschile; nacquero così le prime squadre leggendarie come i Buffalo Germans, compagine nata nel 1895 e che al termine della sua storia nel 1925 aveva al suo attivo l’invidiabile record di 792 partite vinte e sole 86 perse. Un’altra particolarità di questa squadra, oltre alla vittoria nella manifestazione dimostrativa dell’allora nuovo sport, durante le Olimpiadi di Saint Louis del 1904, fu la militanza nelle sue fila di Chuck Taylor, probabilmente una delle primissime celebrità sportive e sicuramente la prima vera star del basket mondiale! Fu lui a dettare lo stile mondiale scegliendo come scarpe le allora semi sconosciute All-Stars della Converse… e da allora molte cose sono cambiate ma le All-Stars sono ancora in tutte le vetrine del mondo e ai piedi di milioni di persone!
Un’altra compagine prestigiona e ancora tutt’oggi famosa in ogni angolo del globo sono gli Harlem Globetrotters, nati nel 1927 da un’intuizione dell’imprenditore inglese “Abe” Saperstein. Nei primi anni parteciparono a numerosi campionati regionali portando sempre in campo quella spettacolarità e felicità tipica dei giocatori afroamericani. Piano piano, partita dopo partita, diventarono quella squadra di Show-time giramondo che sono tutt’ora ma lo spirito originario di quegli anni non si è mai perso.
Altra squadra eccezionale e, almeno nei suoi primi anni, totalmente “on the road” (nel senso che giocavano le loro partite in strada, nei primi playground americani) furono i New York Renaissance. La loro “scelta” di giocare in strada era legata alla forte discriminazione raziale di quei tempi. La squadra era infatti completamente composta da afroamericani della NY povera. Nonostante queste difficoltà, la squadra divenne con il suo girovagare molto famosa, e potè così iscriversi ai primi campionati semi-professionali che iniziarono a comparire negli States dal 1925.
L’avvenimento che però cambiò radicalmente la storia di questo sport furono le Olimpiadi di Berlino del 1936 dove il basket venne inserito ufficialmente nel programma olimpico e nacque la FIBA, l’organismo mondiale che ne coordinava lo sviluppo e la regolamentazione.
Da lì alla nascita dell’NBA bastarono pochi anni…
