Erano gli anni ’60, anni di difficile integrazione tra bianchi e neri, anni di lotte e sogni, come quello di Martin Luther King nella politica e nella società, ma anche come quello di Don Haskins e dei suoi Texas Western. Piccoli tasselli di storia che hanno permesso ad un intero paese di maturare, pian piano cominciare a vedere le persone per quello che sono, indipendentemente dal colore della pelle, piccoli passi che hanno portato fino ai giorni nostri al primo Presidente americano di colore.
Sono storie come quella raccontata nella pellicola “Glory Road” del 2006 che cambiano la coscienza comune. Era il 1966 e la città di El Paso, Texas, accoglie un allenatore semisconosciuto per affidargli la disastrata squadra di basket del college cittadino. Coach Don Haskins capisce subito di avere tra le mani l’opportunità della sua vita, dopo una carriera da giocatore sfortunata ed un inizio come allenatore di liceo femminile. Purtroppo però la squadra è mal concia con pochissimi giocatori di valore e nessun fondo per il reclutamento. Così Don si mette in proprio e va alla ricerca di giocatori di talento sui playground scovando giocatori di colore sconosciuti ma dotati di un grande talento grezzo che toccherà a lui lavorare. Non vi racconto il proseguio del film, voglio solo farvi soffermare su due scene dello stesso.
In quei tempi i giocatori di colore erano ai margini delle squadre di ogni sport collegiale, e il basket non faceva eccezione. Trovare quindi una squadra con 6 giocatori di colore come quella di Don Haskins potete immaginare che scalpore facesse. Una scena molto evocativa in tal senso avviene durante la prima partita dei Texas Western in cui alla presentazione dei giocatori, quelli bianchi vengono applauditi, mentre all’entrata in campo di quelli neri il silenzio cala nel palazzetto. La scena e i suoni dipingono la realtà in cui si muove la storia con una drammatica tristezza che nessuna colonna sonora avrebbe saputo valorizzare meglio. Ma ricordando quella scena, quel silenzio ignobile, il cuore si gonfia quando con le prime vittorie qualcosa dentro la società e gli spettatori si sblocca, e arrivano anche per loro gli applausi.
L’altra scena di cui vi parlavo si svolge nella seconda metà del film, durante la quale i giocatori bianchi della squadra si avvicinano a quelli neri, lentamente vanno alla scoperta del loro mondo, della loro cultura e del loro modo di fare festa e divertirsi, e si accorgono che non è poi tanto diverso dal loro. La musica soprattutto, durante una bella scena girata sul bus che conduce la squadra ad una partita in trasferta, diventa lo strumento di unione e di fratellanza gioiosa tra queste due realtà così diverse ma al tempo stesso così vicine.
Glory Road è stato un gran bel regalo di anniversario, il 40°, per ricordare e celebrare la squadra che ha un posto d’onore nella Hall of Fame del Basket, una squadra che ha saputo non solo vincere ma cambiare il modo di guardare delle persone.
